Next, in the second part, we analyze how both countries managed the crisis of 1958 and their later effects over the “special relationship”. In the first part, we examine the historical context before the crisis of 1958, remarking the principal factors of conflict between Mex-ico and Guatemala. The aim of this essay is to analyze the causes of these changes. However, during the second half of 1960s, the two countries conciliated their differences and began to cooperate in many fields. Final-ly, Mexico and Guatemala normalized their relations in October of the same year, but maintain their mutual recrimination, especially around the sovereignty of Belize. In January 1959, Mexican government decided to break its diplomatic relations with Guatemala. Mexican government demanded to Guatemala an official apologize and indemnification to the victims, but the Guatemalan military government refused. In December 1958, the Guatemalan Air Force attacked several Mexican fishing boats that were an-chored illegally in the Guatemalan coasts. The main purpose of this essay is to provide new evidence about the “special relationship” be-tween Mexico and Guatemala, focusing on the events that occurred in the end of 1950s and 1960s. This has been the case of Mexican-Guatemalan relations. ![]() While this term has lost their relevance in the era of Globalization, this essay considers that this term is still important and many “special relationships” have been forgot in the study of Diplomatic History. This is an analytical concept to describe the close political, cultural and economical relations between two determined countries, whose fundamental characteristic is that the subsistence of one country is altered by the actions of the other and vice versa. ![]() Within the discipline of Diplomatic History and International Relations, we find constantly the term “special relationship”.
